Opportunities to Help

Hurricane Ike Victims

Hurricane Ike's Devastating ResultsClear Creek Community Church Relief Effort:

Clear Creek Community Church, an interdenominational church in League City, has teamed with the Christians Organized for Relief Efforts to assist in the hurricane relief efforts in south Texas. CCCC has established www.ikeassist.org  to identify needs, recruit volunteers and accept donations for this long- term recovery effort.

With schools in the Bay Area resuming and people returning to work, there is a continuing need for volunteers. C.O.R.E. Alliance has established a base camp at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 18220 Upper Bay Rd. Across from the Johnson Space Center off NASA Pkwy. Volunteers are asked to go to this area where they will be given instructions and sent out in teams.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. There are no particular skills required and work has mainly consisted of removing personal belongings, cutting out sheetrock and sanitizing the homes to prevent mold buildup. C.OR.E. leaders will provide proper training and tools, as well as meals and housing for volunteers from out of town.

To get involved with this relief effort by volunteering or donating visit www.ikeassist.org

or contact Duane Theriot of Clear Creek Community Church at dtheriot@clearcreek.org

Hurricane Ike Adopt-A-Church Ministry:

The Adopt-A-Program seeks to connect churches affected by Hurricane Ike to other churches, associations, or individuals who wish to “adopt” one of these churches by providing much needed assistance.

Churches affected by Ike can link to an online form where they can post any needs they now have. Another link lists these and their needs in a format easily accessible for others who wish to adopt a church.

If you would like to adopt one of the listed churches and help with their recovery efforts, please contact the church or pastor directly.

The Volunteers Organizations

Assisting in Disaster

 Needs Your Help!

The VOAD is a network of religious and other non-profit organizations that are prepared to participate in relief efforts that might be needed in case of natural disaster. VOAD works in conjunction with Williamson County, FEMA and the American Red Cross by providing a list of contact names/churches/ organizations willing to volunteer as ‘first responders’ to help those with immediate and long-term needs as a result of declared disasters in our community and surrounding counties.

In the short term, members typically have an ability to provide temporary parking and staging areas, temporary shelter, services or supplies. Long term assistance is usually in the form of case management, help with rebuilding or supplies.

The VOAD is looking for a three (3) year commitment from faith based organizations that are willing to commit resources (personnel, funds or equipment) to meet the needs of people affected by disaster, without regard to race, creed, gender or age. A list of help and helpers, in each and every corner of Williamson County, is currently being constructed into one database. If you, your church or non-profit organization is interested in becoming a VOAD volunteer,

Mission Field Report

from

The Balkans

   Charles & Carol Baker

   November 3, 2008

Prayer and Praise:

  • Praise for the volunteer teams who have already committed to coming next year and pray for others who are still making their plans
  • Pray for our national friends who are facing another winter – that they would have shelter and heat, that their meager food supplies would last and that their small flocks and herds would survive
  • Pray for our time in the states to be restful and refreshing

We’ve just about come to the end of another volunteer season for this year.  It has been an exciting and rewarding time as over one hundred volunteers have been willing to come and share hugs, strong Turkish coffee, shopska salad and the love of Jesus with the people here.  They have endured hot summer days, autumn rains, muddy roads, our lovable blue van and changes in plans to bring the Good News.  They’ve laughed at leaky showers, loud disco music and smoke filled restaurants.  They brought suit cases filled with Picante sauce, peanut butter and chocolate chips. We’ve seen through their fresh eyes the beautiful mountains, the fertile valleys and the needs of the people they come to serve. Perhaps the sweetest words we hear them say is “next year!”

Our last teams in Macedonia were two different medical teams from Milledgeville, Georgia and Meridian, Mississippi.  They worked in big towns and small mountain villages, dispensing pain medicine, checking blood pressure and giving away eyeglasses. Between the two teams, they saw well over a thousand patients in twenty plus clinics.  (We always tell volunteers that they can sleep when they get back to America J!)  Both of these teams have come before and they saw many national friends from their previous trips.  Thank you for coming and making a difference over here!

Charles accompanied a Crown Business Seminar team while they were here in Bulgaria.  They came from First Baptist, Lake Jackson, Texas as part of an on going partnership there.  They connected with businessmen, university personnel and local government officials as they conducted financial seminars in Smolyan as well as in Sofia.  You guys were great!

When we’re not with a team, we enjoy our time here in Sofia.  Our mountains have just a bit of snow on them already, though we’re having beautiful Fall days right now.  We continue to worship at the International Baptist Church here and enjoy meeting people from all over the world – over 20 nations have been represented so far this year.  Each Sunday, someone is asked to pray in their heart language – what a blessing that is, knowing that God hears us in any language we speak!

In just a few days, we are heading back to the states for a few weeks of visiting with family and friends (and several Wal-Mart visits!).  Texas is our destination and we’ll be there from November 7th through December 2nd.  Most of our time will be in the Austin area and we’d love to see as many of you as possible.

We’ll leave you with some pictures of our friends over here.

God can do anything, you know - far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Ephesians 3:20

An Opportunity to Serve in Romania

Following a mission trip to Romania, Stan Ray and his wife established a non-profit charity, Emanuel Agriculture Development, for the purpose of supporting the ministry of a private Christian University in Oradea, Romania. Their objective is to establish a formal college-level agribusiness and economic development program to help the Romanian people prosper in the free market economy. By teaching modern business principles and practices, but in the context of agriculture, people in rural communities throughout Romania will learn how to establish commercially-viable farming operations that provide economic stability and prosperity for their families, their communities and their country.

They are currently seeking opportunities to meet with potential sponsors as well as those interested in traveling to Romania to share their agribusiness expertise. If you would like to be involved, you may contact Stan Ray at sray@agdevelopment.org or visit their website at www.agdevelopment.org.

First Baptist Church of Huntsville, Texas

and

The Restorative Justice Ministries of North America

Welcome Back Ministry connects the men and women released from prison as well as their families with churches across Texas and the United States. Every year this ministry impacts about 50,000 of the70,000 men and women released from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Over the past years, it has been discovered that out of the nearly 150 men released daily from the Huntsville prison, less than 10 are connected with a local church. As volunteers meet daily with these families, they are discovering that many are willing to give a local church a chance and others are willing to start some type of Bible study group in their homes.

  • Churches are needed to minister to ex-offenders and their families so these families would be connected with a local church.
  • Churches are needed to mentor/train an off campus Bible study group.
  • Individuals are needed to minister to ex-offenders and their families or to lead a Bible study group.

TRANSFORMING APARTMENT LIVING

THROUGH CHRISTIAN MINISTRY

Apartment Life - You bring a heart for your neighbors.....we provide the apartment

Apartment Life is a simple yet powerful and scalable strategy for reaching apartment communities for Christ. CARES Teams are provided a rent-free apartment and are responsible for welcoming new residents, planning social functions and being available in times of special need for the staff and residents. These activities position CARES Teams as the "hub" of community life and provide the platform for building spiritual relationships, sharing the gospel and connecting residents to the church.

CARES is many things, but the bottom line is that it is an opportunity for lives to be changed. Do you have a passion for building authentic community and sharing the love of Christ with your neighbors? Apartment Life provides free apartments for CARES Teams (married couple or two single adults) to do just that! Select communities near our church and across the city are waiting for teams.
